Andy Warhol Dollar Signs are a range of artworks created by artist Andy Warhol.

Warhol had first produced works containing dollar signs in the 1960s and returned to the theme in the early 1980s, creating a number of well known and highly collectible pieces in different colours.

Some commentators see his Dollar Sign works as a statement on the greed and commercialism of Western society, although Warhol did not hide his own love of money.

“I like money on the wall,” he is quoted in D Bourdon’s 1995 book Warhol.

“Say you were going to buy a $200,000 painting. I think you should take that money, tie it up, and hang it on the wall. Then when someone visited you, the first thing they would see is the money on the wall.”

The dollar signs that appear in Warhol’s works were designed by the artist himself, as none of the examples he could find supplied enough of an impact to be the epitome of the dollar.

He is thought to have crafted a number of prototypes before producing a range of styles he was happy with.

  • A 1981 Dollar Sign sold for £1.55m at a Christie’s London auction in June 2008.
  • A 1982 Dollar Sign realised £114,000 at Sotheby’s London in June 2006.
  • A 1981 Dollar Sign achieved $1.58m at Sotheby’s New York in November 2005.
  • Three Dollar Signs, created by Warhol in 1981, achieved $464,000 at a Sotheby’s New York sale in November 2006.
